A tireless promoter of phycology and international collaboration among phycologists, Dr. Papenfuss was one of the founders of the International Phycological Society, a President of the Society and a member of its Executive Council, and a driving force for the establishment of the International Phycological Congresses.

The Papenfuss Award recognizes the poster that is judged to be the most meritorious in each of several topical categories at an International Phycological Congress. Winners receive a certificate and a monetary award, which most recently was US$250.
