Welcome to the IPS

The Society was founded in 1960 and is dedicated to:

  • the development of phycology;
  • the distribution of phycological information; and,
  • international cooperation among phycologists and phycological organizations.

The Society organizes the International Phycological Congresses at 4-yearly intervals. The next Congress, the ninth, will be held in Japan in 2009at a date to be announced.

It is administed by a Council of elected members, chaired by a President, who is appointed by Council. The current President is Professor Christine Maggs of the Queen's University Belfast in Ireland.

Membership is open to all those interested in Phycology and the journal is distributed to members at a much-reduced rate.

The Society awards a number of prizes in memory of prominent members.

Phycologia is published bimonthly by the International Phycological Society and serves as a publishing medium for information about any aspect of phycology, basic or applied, including biochemistry, cell biology, developmental biology, ecology, evolution, genetics, molecular biology, physiology, and systematics.
